A well-planned wardrobe makes a bedroom feel twice as big. Here is how to plan one that fits your room and the way you store things.

Sliding or hinged doors?

As a rule of thumb, if there is less than about 90 cm between the wardrobe and the bed, choose sliding doors.

How deep should it be?

About 55–60 cm deep lets hangers sit comfortably. Shallower wardrobes work for folded clothes only.

Plan the inside

  • Long hanging for sarees, kurtas, dresses and coats.
  • Double hanging (two rails) for shirts and trousers.
  • Shelves and drawers for folded clothes, with a locker drawer for valuables.
  • A loft on top for suitcases and winter quilts, very useful in Lucknow homes.

How to measure your wall

  1. Measure the width of the wall at the bottom, middle and top, and use the smallest number.
  2. Measure floor-to-ceiling height in two places.
  3. Note switches, windows, skirting and any beam or AC pipe.
  4. Take a photo of the wall and send it with your measurements.
